Robert was a former  member of the Irish Defence Forces.

The Mayo casualties from world war one and world war two  in those sections , were posted some year's ago,  since then  many names  have been supplied  by families and relations around the world, we are grateful  for this  assistance. We have also continued to research  and look  for our soldiers.

We have well over 1,100 Mayo , world  war one casualties recorded in our record's .  We hope to  have  the newer names added at some point in the future.

Ballina World War One Memorial

The news that a  new world war  one memorial is  to be unveiled in Ballina is most welcome. The local committee are to be congratulated on their fantastic  work  and achievement. Well done to all concerned. It is expected that Achill Island will  be following their  example at some stage over the next year.

 
Mr Johnny Garvey R.I.P.

The sad death has occurred of Mr Johnny Garvey, a Royal Air Force world war two veteran, from Buncom, Ballyheane, Castlebar. We extend our deepest sympathy  to his family.  A fireside interview  with Johnny Garvey was recorded some years ago and is featured in the  video section of this website.He died aged 97 years.

 
Centenary Concert & Ceremony

We are delighted to announce the details  of our world war one centenary concert. This will take place in Christ Church, Castlebar,  on Sunday evening the 11th of May, at 8pm.

The concert  will feature the wonderful, "Cor Mhaigh Eo"our county choir, the fabulous Mayo soprano Francie McNicholas from Swinford and the magnificent tenor Jerry Lynch  from the County Clare, Jerry's version of the song  "A Silent Night 1914" , was quite  simply unique &  has never been bettered.

The Soroptimist Clubs Association of Ireland, are holding their Annual Convention that weekend and they will be holding a special wreath laying ceremony in the Mayo Peace Park at 11am that same morning, when they will  be unveiling a special plaque to mark the participation of the women of Ireland  in the world war's. 

This will be a wonderful evening of music & song.We would love to have your support and attendance.

 

 
100th Anniversary of W.W.1 in Mayo
